What’s New in Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC)?

After the 2016 KMC meeting held in Trieste, Italy, the 12th International Workshop and Congress is returning to Bogotá, Colombia, the Cradle of KMC and the training site for more than 75 teams from 35 countries since 1994. In 1998, 120 participants from 30 countries met in Bogotá for the Second International Workshop on KMC and documented reasons for resistance and solutions to barriers in KMC implementation. It is interesting that many barriers still exist 20 years later, even if KMC is now used all over the world. KMC at country level is still a challenge, even in Colombia, where 52 KMC programs are being implemented all over the country. This will be the main topic of the 12th International Network on KMC (INK) workshop (14-15 November 2018). The INK Congress (16-17 November) will focus on all the neuro-protective evidence-based measures that can be implemented to protect the brain of the premature and low birth weight (LBW) infant from birth to the end of the first year, corrected age. The focus will also be on KMC as the main neuro-protective measure available in the first 1000 days of life of the high-risk newborn.

The Kangaroo Foundation in Bogotá will organize the events, in collaboration with the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (PUJ) of Bogotá, UNICEF, PAHO, the Colombian Ministry of Health, the Health Authorities of Bogotá, the INK Scientific Committee and some selected private investors.

Below you will find the preliminary information on the meetings. The dates were chosen in such a way that the closing day will coincide with the World Prematurity Day, celebrated every year on November 17th.
